Extended-family sessions exist because getting everybody in one place happens once or twice a year at best — a birthday, a christening, someone flying in. When it does happen, thirty minutes with a photographer produces something no phone photograph replaces.
The key is a planned running order. The full group is photographed first, then each household, then the grandparents with the grandchildren, then whatever combinations you ask for.
